We’re not really so far from the ocean where I live — just a 2½ or 3 hour drive — but we don’t get there often enough. Much of the year, here in the lower Sacramento Valley, we feel beach-deprived (unless we’re visiting some other great mountain or desert landscape). So during the latest of our almost-annual post-Christmas visits to the Monterey Peninsula, we spent plenty of time strolling beaches at Carmel and Monterey.

This wasn’t a serious photographic outing, so for a change of pace, I left my heavy DSLR at home and traveled light photographically, with just an iPhone 5. These were all taken using the Hipstamatic app. All received some post-processing in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Wishing you all a happy, beach-filled, creative new year!
