BTC Burns

BTC 2003

Having watched the progress of the Rim Fire for the last week, we hoped it would remain north of Harden Flat and Berkeley Tuolumne Camp. But then on August 25 we and thousands of other families were greatly saddened to learn that fire at last swept through the forest canopy along Harden Flat Road and the South Fork Tuolumne River. By late afternoon, falling embers had spread fire throughout camp, reducing the Dining Hall, the Rec Hall, many smaller buildings, and all the canvas tent cabins to ash and rubble.

BTC 2003

Floating in the river, summer 2003.

Like many other families, ours looked forward to an annual week at BTC (9 years), helped get camp ready for the summer and made staff show costumes on Work Weekends (7 years), and made lasting friendships with other families. Peter was on D-Hall staff in 2011 and Christina had hopes of working in the Nature Center.

I’ve posted many photos from visits to BTC in the past.  Now here are some more, mostly from our earlier years at camp.

Will the City rebuild? Will the Forest Service approve the permits needed? Time will tell, but lots of people are hoping so. First, though, the site needs clearing of debris, the soils need protection from erosion, and “danger trees” have to be removed. Then there’s the planning, the permitting, and the fund-raising. Then the water, sanitation, and electrical systems. Then a new D-Hall and a few other buildings, and eventually, new tent cabins for campers. And when they announce the next Work Weekend, we’ll be there.
