I occasionally dabble in some illustration, and recently I’ve hit upon a way to combine some of the digital methods I use for visual simulations in my day-job to produce an illustration style I enjoy: architectural subjects drawn in clean lines with richly textured, colorful surfaces. And maybe some concept of a story behind them….
The following began as 3D models in Google SketchUp. Selected views were exported to Adobe Illustrator for minor editing of the lines in vector format. These were brought into Adobe Photoshop, where photographs of textured surfaces were applied to the walls and other flat surface areas. Shadows from the SketchUp model, details from other drawings, backgrounds from other photos, and masked adjustment layers were all added in Photoshop to complete each composition.
The crop dusters passed near our house every morning …
Grandpa’s in the attic again …
He stepped back from the window but continued to gaze outside…
