Knight Foundry, in Sutter Creek, California, was established 138 years ago to supply and repair heavy equipment used in the mining and timber industries of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Samuel Knight developed a high-speed, cast iron water wheel that enabled a high-pressure stream of water to spin a shaft to run lathes and other large machinery. The single-cup Knight wheel was a forerunner of the two-cup Pelton wheel, which turned out to be more efficient and later became the industry standard.
