The Western Engine

The interpretive sign tells us this engine was manufactured by the Western Gas Engine Company in Los Angeles, California, in 1908. After a series of owners at different mines in Nevada, it came to Ione (5 miles north of Berlin) in 1920. Some time later it came to Berlin and after hoisting miners and ore cars into and out of this mine for a while, it’s been sitting in the open, as you see it here, since at least 1940.
