The Sea of Tules

In 1859, James M. Hutchings wrote that from California’s inland delta, “an apparently interminable sea of tules extends nearly one hundred and fifty miles south, up the valley of the San Joaquin.”  Today the tules mostly terminate quite soon after one finds them, but here, along the wetland boardwalk at Cosumnes River Preserve, is a hint of what Hutchings and others saw on late autumn trips from San Francisco to the Sierra Nevada.
