Thousands of Tons per Minute

The Empire Mine in Grass Valley once had one of the largest stamp mills (to crush gold and silver ore) in the country.  Stamps like this one hammered the rocks 90 times a minute.  The mill had a combined “dropping weight” of some 5,500 tons per minute.  The noise was literally deafening.
